Maternity hospital in Ukraine during the war

In maternity hospital in the city of Mykolaiv (Ukraine), doctors and nurses continue their mission of welcoming babies.

The sirens rang loudly throughout the city of Mykolaiv, the pregnant woman in the 3rd Maternity Hospital calmly held her stomach, walked down to the basement.

No one speaks a word. They sat still on the bed in the makeshift room. It’s only been two or three days in the hospital, but the pregnant women have adapted to the new situation, when the alarm goes off, they go to the basement. Out of alarm, the pregnant women lead each other to the 2nd floor.

At 8 p.m., another whistle sounded, and they went downstairs again. Some pregnant women move heavily, clinging to the wall and the nurse’s hand. The doctor let pregnant woman Alina Bondarenko stay on top because she was about to give birth. The night seems to be quieter than the day, despite the sirens.

Sister Alina Bondarenko said: “The whistles make me mentally exhausted from worrying about both myself and my baby. Especially when you’re having contractions but you’re forced to constantly go down to the basement to save yourself and your baby“.

In the maternity ward, the husband is with Bondarenko at the moment. A silence prevailed…

In a nearby paper-cluttered room, three pregnant women were lying with their children in their arms. Natalia gave birth to her first daughter, Maria, less than 24 hours ago.

According to doctors at the hospital, the operating room, where doctors handle difficult births, is located on the fourth floor of the building. Giving birth on it is really risky because they have to turn on the lights and attract attention. Of the 49 babies the hospital has delivered since the war broke out, only three have been delivered by caesarean section. Nearly half of the women admitted to the hospital since February 24 have given birth in the basement. At night, the sirens are heard more clearly, making the sleep of pregnant women here restless.
