Risk of BA.2 variant causing a new wave of infections in the US

The White House’s chief medical adviser, Dr. Anthony Fauci, said BA.2 infects about 50% to 60% faster than the original Omicron variant, although it does not appear to cause more serious illness. Health officials continue to emphasize that vaccines and booster shots are still the best ways to prevent the disease from spreading.
Variant BA.2 has caused an increase in the number of COVID-19 cases in China and parts of Europe. New BA.2 infections are estimated to account for 25% or 30% of new cases in the US, but this variant is projected to soon become the most common variant in the US.
Mr. Fauci warned of “an outbreak of cases” of BA.2, but it will probably not be as large as other waves of variant infections.
