For the President of Finland, increasing security by joining the North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO) could pose the risk of an escalation of tensions in Europe.

In an interview with the Financial Times magazine yesterday, Finnish President Sauli Niinisto said that the country is currently a member of the European Union (EU) but not in NATO. The country’s two main options in the future are to join NATO or strengthen military cooperation with the US and neighboring Sweden without joining the alliance.

According to Mr. Niinisto, joining NATO might seem like a no-brainer for Finland, but all options also come with associated risks. The main risk at the moment is an escalation of the situation in Europe amid the ongoing conflict in Ukraine. However, President Niinisto stressed that Finland will ultimately put the country’s security first when making decisions.
