According to records at hospitals, besides symptoms such as prolonged cough, headache, insomnia, chest pain, shortness of breath, etc., there are also many patients suffering from eye pain after contracting Covid-19.

At Bai Chay Hospital (Quang Ninh), recently, the hospital’s eye clinic has continuously received many patients with pink eye after Covid-19. Statistics of the eye clinic show that up to 40% of the total patients who come to see eye diseases have post-Covid-19 conjunctivitis.

After going to the hospital for an eye exam, the doctor diagnosed post-Covid-19 conjunctivitis. Patients were prescribed and instructed to use antibiotics, anti-inflammatory drugs in the form of trachea, artificial tears, and daily eye hygiene with physiological saline solution.

Doctor CKII Nguyen Thanh Luan – Department of Ophthalmology, University of Medicine and Pharmacy Hospital, Ho Chi Minh City – said that in Vietnam, there is currently no research on the effects of Covid-19 on human eyes, but the world has. A meta-analytical study by author Naser Nasiri (Institute for the Future of Health) and colleagues in 2021, based on 38 previous studies, with a total of 8,219 Covid-19 patients (mostly female) gender from 7 to 65 years old).

The results show that the proportion of Covid-19 patients with eye symptoms is 11.3%, which means that 1 in 10 Covid-19 patients will have eye problems.

The specific eye diseases are: dry eyes/flush (16%), red eyes (13.3%), watery eyes (12.8%), most acute conjunctivitis (88.8%) ).

In post-Covid-19 patients, it shows mainly eye diseases related to blood clotting disorders, neurological disorders. Red eyes is a common manifestation in post-Covid-19 patients, of which 89% are conjunctivitis.

However, the patient must be seen by an ophthalmologist, as there are many other more serious eye conditions that also present with red eyes, such as uveitis, episcleritis, scleritis. , orbital cellulitis… if not treated promptly, may result in permanent vision loss.

Some studies show that infection with Covid-19 can change the condition of retinal microvessels for the worse. If a Covid-19 or post-Covid-19 patient has blurred vision, they must immediately seek medical attention because retinal microvascular disease is difficult to treat.

According to Dr. Nhung, to prevent sequelae and eye diseases after covid-19, Dr. Nhung recommends: F0 needs to prepare 0.9% physiological saline (10 ml) to clean the eyes. Physiological saline has the effect of washing away viruses and inflammatory factors from the surface of the eyeball, helping the return of tears and faster recovery in cases of red eye.
