Children with COVID-19 with rashes is more of an encouraging sign than worrying

Dr. Dr. Truong Huu Khanh

Currently, although the COVID-19 outbreak shows signs of abating, the number of new cases is still high, what the public is most worried about is that groups of children who have not been vaccinated against COVID-19 are at risk of getting worse. However, according to experts, most children with COVID-19 only experience symptoms such as fatigue and fever within 2-3 days. Children who are overweight, obese, immunocompromised, premature, or have underlying medical conditions require special attention.

For children with COVID-19, a common problem is rashes on the body. Many parents wonder if this is dangerous. Mai Trang (Thanh Xuan, Hanoi) said that her 4-year-old son, when he contracted COVID-19, had a high fever for the first 2 days, luckily he responded to fever-reducing medication. On the 3rd and 4th day, the baby looks rash with low fever. Seeing her child like this, Mai Trang was very worried, thought her child was allergic, but did not dare to give her the medicine but took her to the hospital for examination.

TS.BS Truong Huu Khanh – Deputy Chair of the Ho Chi Minh City Infectious Diseases Association said that not only when children are exposed to COVID-19 but also when children contract diseases caused by viruses such as measles, rubella, dengue fever, zika, etc., there is still a rash condition, if accompanied by fever, people call it typhus.

According to doctor Khanh, children with COVID-19 have signs of a rash, which indicates that they will soon recover from the disease and are recovering. Illustration.

Doctor Khanh also said that not all children with COVID-19 develop a rash. Some children have many rashes, some children have small rashes, but some children do not have this condition, parents need not worry.

“Most viral illnesses are in the convalescent and convalescent stage when the rash appears (with the exception of the measles rash, which may have few symptoms for about 4 days). In the past, when there was no COVID-19, many children with dengue fever who were “on” were very miserable, then rashes appeared on their bodies, making many worried parents rush to the hospital. At the hospital, when the doctor checked and found the child had a rash, he was overjoyed that the child had survived. Now with COVID-19 too, when you see a child with a rash, it means the disease will be cured soon, parents need not panic,” said Dr. Khanh.

According to Dr. Khanh, if the child shows symptoms of a rash, treat the symptoms, such as fever, give fever-reducing drinks. When their child develops an itchy rash, some parents mistake an allergy or problem and buy medication to treat it themselves. This is not recommended. Because as mentioned above, when the child has a rash, it is in the recovery stage, just take care of the child normally such as improving nutrition, personal hygiene, loosening clothes…

Finally, Dr Khanh suggested that when a child is exposed to COVID-19, apart from following the recommendations of the Ministry of Health, parents should not be too confused, because it will affect the psychology of the whole family. Please monitor the child’s symptoms, if the child is premature, immunocompromised, overweight, obese, should be more careful…

“With normal healthy children, most people recover quickly when exposed to COVID-19, so parents don’t have to worry too much, but don’t be subjective either,” said Dr. Khanh.
