Dropping out of medical school, the Saigon boy became a tourism ambassador for Thailand thanks to his “terrible” achievement.
Phan Thanh Tung (or Tung Chill) was born and raised in Ho Chi Minh City in a family of intellectuals, three working as an engineer, the mother’s side is in the field of education. Since childhood, his parents longed for Tung to become a doctor or engineer in the future. But that is not the dream of the dreamer and the traveller.
“Abandoning medical school was the right decision”
After graduating from secondary school, Thanh Tung’s family suddenly had an accident when his father had a stroke and died. As the only son in the family, he is aware of the noble responsibility to be the mainstay, to have a stable job to take care of his mother and sister.
During his high school years, Tung won a full scholarship, so he didn’t spend any money. After graduating, he chose a leading public university in Vietnam and studied medicine according to his deceased father’s wishes.
During 3 years of studying, he felt pressured because he did not fit into this environment. Here, Tung’s achievements are also average, nothing outstanding. After struggling for a while because he was uncertain about what to start, Tung decided to pause his studies and pursue his passion.

“At that time, I thought that studying again would take a long time, and I would regret quitting. But I know for sure that after graduation I will not be able to do this job. The reason is that every time I enter the hospital, I am very scared. And only one’s forte job can stand without depending on anyone.” Tung shared.
Since then, Tung began to learn about the top media and television companies at that time in Ho Chi Minh City. The guy at this time was surprised when he submitted a resume with poor experience and was accepted into the biggest company at that time.
Like that, Tung plunged into work like “burning himself” with the thought that he must have a position and money to satisfy his own pursuits and take care of his family for a better life.
After 7 years of working and achieving certain achievements, Tung looks back at himself and asks himself the following questions: “What is my knowledge base like? Who am I in this life? Where is the value I create for myself? Am I really the breadwinner of my family or bring temporary values? I Has it brought benefits to society?“. That’s why Tung put aside a well-developed job to fulfill his dream of studying abroad.
Self-sufficient studying abroad, struggling economically to become a tourism ambassador
During a family meal, Tung casually suggested to his mother and sister: “What would happen if I went to study abroad?“. As soon as he finished speaking, the guy was surprised with the enthusiastic support of both women in the house: “Mom told me to stop, I’ll help with any difficulty. And she confirmed that she would support her brother with both hands.”
With the approval of the whole family, Tung immediately started to apply for a Creative Communication major in Thailand. Tung believes that this is the right and appropriate decision at that time. When he went to study abroad, he met many lucks and new opportunities.
Tung decided to study abroad at the age of 27.
The road to success has to go through many thorns. Initially, due to self-sufficient study abroad, Tung struggled financially. Sometimes, having to be frugal to the point of going to the supermarket to buy a bunch of vegetables for 7,000 VND, I have to think twice.
The initial difficulty was like that, but in exchange for the learning process, Tung achieved remarkable achievements. Always elected as team leader, very high subject scores always reach 3.91 to 3.95 (4.0 is the highest). Thanks to his “terrible” academic record, Tung became an international student representing Bang Coc University to promote Thai education to Vietnamese students.
Then he was invited to the event of the Tourism Authority of Thailand. Here, Tung Chill was a speaker and sat down to talk with Ms. Ratiwan Boonprakhong – Director of Tourism Authority of Thailand, representative office of HCM – TATHCM. After this talkshow, the TATHCM side unexpectedly cooperated with Tung in the project of introducing Thai tourism to Vietnamese people in the new normal life.
Tung has achieved a lot of success when choosing the right path for his forte.
Not long after that, Tung was officially selected as the first YouTuber/Travel Blogger of Vietnam as an ambassador to promote Thai tourism, cuisine and people in the new normal life. This mission will be carried out for 1 year from July 2021.
Along with that, the young man also set up a Youtube channel with 3 categories revolving around 3 themes of travel, food and life and received support. Despite the complicated developments of the Covid-19 epidemic, Tung brought Thailand closer to the Vietnamese tourism community through videos on his YouTube channel with millions of views.

Currently, Tung Chill’s Youtube channel has more than 600,000 subscribers. The content that the Travel blogger regularly shares is interesting and fascinating stories about the places, cuisine, and people of the Golden Temple.
Thanh Tung revealed that he is still single. Planning to get married in 6-7 years and need an understanding partner for my passion for work.
