Internet Explorer on Windows 10 ‘retired’ from June 15

“As previously announced, the future of Internet Explorer on Windows is Microsoft Edge. The Internet Explorer 11 (IE11) desktop application will be retired from June 15, 2022 for some versions of Windows 10,” Microsoft wrote.

Affected people include IE11 users provisioned via Semi-Annual Channel (SAC), Windows 10 client SKU (20H2 and later), and Windows 10 IoT (20H2 or later). After the aforementioned time, the desktop application will be disabled and no longer supported. It will automatically switch users to Microsoft Edge on launch.

Edge assumes default web browsing on Windows. According to many reviews, Edge is not a bad browser like Internet Explorer because it is based on Chromium, similar to Google Chrome. For users and businesses that still depend on Internet Explorer in 2022, Microsoft will keep Internet Explorer mode in Edge browser for compatibility, until 2029.

Microsoft once announced plans for Internet Explorer on Windows 10 and Microsoft 365 to “retire” in August 2020. The company then ended browser support on all Microsoft 365 apps and services from August 17, 2021.

As planned, Internet Explorer will be disabled on Windows 8 and Windows 7 in January 2023.
