Living in luxury for 23 years on a yacht

Mario Salcedo (72 years old) has gone on hundreds of trips over the past 23 years and only took 18 months off due to the Covid-19 pandemic. Born in Miami, Florida, USA, Salcedo has spent most of his life working for several major financial firms, including Federal Express, traveling the world and watching others have fun. Then, one day in 1997, he decided to quit his job, leaving behind a lot of benefits and money, at the age of 47.

Before leaving his job, Salcedo had never been on a cruise, so he booked six trips with six different tour operators to really get a feel for what was going on. At the end of this experiment, he believed that this was the life he wanted in the future.

Over the course of two decades, Mario Salcedo has been almost constantly on different ships, including the legendary Royal Caribbean cruiser, Liberty of the Seas or Oasis of the Seas. In May 2019, Salcedo accumulated 8,000 membership points at Royal Caribbean and the company called him “super Mario”, a super VIP customer of this yacht group.

During his travels, Mario Salcedo has learned to cut out “no value” activities like taking out the trash and doing laundry in order to enjoy the things that really matter, and make him what he is. “happiest man in the world”.

For most people, traveling happens only once in a lifetime, but for Salcedo, it’s everyday life. Traveling for him never gets old and he has no intention of going back to living above ground. In fact, Mr. Salcedo already has a travel schedule until April 2023. There were weeks when he booked two yachts at the same time and had to decide which side to cancel.

Living on a cruise ship is really expensive, especially when it’s been 23 years. While Salcedo saved some money while working, he still has to work to maintain his lavish lifestyle. He manages portfolios for individual clients, but it takes place in the comfort of a cruise ship deck and he never complains about it.

When he was on the ships for so long, Mario rarely got the chance to return to the surface. That made him realize he no longer belonged there. “I’m so used to being on the ship that I feel more comfortable than on land,” Salcedo told All Things Cruise.
