Novak Djokovic regained his world number one spot this week, but is only 750 points clear of Rafael Nadal as he enters the clay season.

This season alone, Nadal has won the most ATP points with 3,350 points, leading the race for the ATP Finals in Turin at the end of the year. The 35-year-old won the Melbourne Summer Set, Australian Open, Mexican Open and was a finalist at the BNP Paribas Open. Nadal earns twice as much as Medvedev. The Russian won 1,720 points, 290 more than Taylor Fritz. Djokovic only ranked 130th this season, with 90 points won at the Dubai Championships – the only tournament he has attended since the start of the year.

Djokovic faces the risk of being deducted points in the coming months, due to his vaccination status and the burden of last season’s achievements. The Serb must maintain 5,575 points through August, including 2,000 at Roland Garros and 2,000 at Wimbledon. Nadal has maintained 3,220 points so far, while Medvedev has 1,490 points.

Medvedev will return to world number one if he reaches the semifinals of the Miami Open next week for his second Masters 1000 this year. This event is absent both Nadal and Djokovic. Spanish tennis player decided to take a break before clay season, and Nole was not allowed into the US.

Djokovic risks missing more tournaments in North America if he is not vaccinated. Canadian Masters CEO Eugene Lapierre said on March 21 that the world number one was not eligible to enter Canada. He said: “Currently, Djokovic cannot enter Canada without being vaccinated against Covid-19. Rules may change depending on the evolution of the disease. We will have to wait longer, but obviously there is a risk for Djokovic.” .

After missing two consecutive Masters 1000 matches in the US this month, Djokovic confirmed his participation in the Serbia Open, the tournament being held in his hometown of Belgrade. He also attended the Monte Carlo Masters – the first Masters 1000 tournament of the clay season, which the 34-year-old lost in the third round last year.
