Noise simulation for people who ‘ride electric cars, miss petrol cars’

AmericaAfter BMW and Mercedes, it was GMC’s turn to complete a simulated sound system on the Hummer EV electric car to produce the sound of an internal combustion engine.

For drivers who still prefer to press the gas to produce the roar of a V8, electric cars that are too quiet can be frustrating. To compensate, some automakers make unique sounds for eco-friendly cars, as BMW or Mercedes do. And now, Bose introduces the first application of EVSE (electric vehicle sound reinforcement system) for GMC Hummer EV 2022.

According to Bose, EVSE technology will transmit the distinctive thrust of the internal combustion engine into the cab through the Bose speaker system, to create a familiar environment for drivers familiar with petrol or diesel vehicles.

However, there is more than one generic sound, Bose offers a collection of different sounds. In Normal driving mode, the sound is soft and smooth. In Terrain mode, the tone is lower and Off-road mode will have noise and vibration similar to when a car is speeding through gravel and sand terrain.

EVSE technology will stand out most when the Hummer EV is activated in Watts to Freedom mode. The sound was later described as a combination of short, repeated sections of an electronic guitar with feedback from the subwoofer creating vibrations, while an adaptive air suspension system lowers altitude and center of gravity. . And the sound will switch, signaling the car is ready to break through with a 1,000 horsepower electric motor with 15,574 Nm of torque. The Watts to Freedom mode helps the Hummer EV accelerate from 0-97 km/h in just about three seconds.

Accompanying EVSE technology are 14 Bose speakers, including a wide woofer located in the two front doors and a bass box located under the rear seats.

The GMC Hummer EV is a re-enactment of the “off-road king” Hummer but uses only an electric motor. The Hummer EV includes both a pickup and an SUV version. In the US, the pickup version starts at $90,000 and the SUV version starts at $80,000.
