Online learning during the COVID-19 pandemic, 7-year-old boy swallows pen cap more than 5cm long

While studying online, pediatric patient NTD (7 years old, residing in Yen Lac, Vinh Phuc) swallowed the pen cap into his stomach. After that, the patient felt severe abdominal pain, making the family extremely worried and was immediately taken to Vinh Phuc Provincial General Hospital for emergency.

Here, the patient was diagnosed with a foreign body in the gastrointestinal tract. The doctors consulted and decided to intervene by endoscopic anesthesia to pick up gastrointestinal foreign bodies.

During the endoscopy, the doctors discovered that the foreign body was located in the large curvature of the child’s stomach. The endoscopy team carried out to pick up the foreign body, a pen cap measuring 5.5x1cm. After the procedure, the patient recovered well, no more pain, no complications.

According to Dr. Tran Doan Lien, Department of Gastrointestinal Internal Medicine, gastrointestinal foreign bodies are a very common problem in young children due to their hyperactive nature, curiosity, or putting objects in their hands in their mouths. Foreign bodies falling into the airways or esophagus cause unpredictable consequences, even life-threatening if not handled promptly.

Doctors recommend: Adults should look after young children carefully, do not allow children to play with small objects that easily make them curious and then put them in their mouths, swallowing can cause consequences. what a pity. In some cases, the foreign body is stuck in the esophagus, if the esophageal lumen is damaged, the baby will have to stay in the hospital for a long time and eat through the nasogastric tube.
