Vital Auto creates concept cars (complete models for display) for a wide range of clients including Rolls-Royce, McLaren, Jaguar, Lotus, Volvo, Nissan, Tata and Geely. The company uses two different methods to convert design drawings into actual vehicle models. The first method is subtractive manufacturing, where a CNC (computer-controlled) machine is in charge of engraving. The machine will cut the solid aluminum block into finished parts.

In contrast, another method is 3D printing in the form of additive manufacturing. Parts are made by adding material layer by layer until the desired shape is achieved. This method can be more efficient than reducer manufacturing because it does not have to recycle excess aluminum and create shapes that cannot be achieved by traditional methods.

“Many automakers don’t have time to experiment on their own, but they can ask us to make different components to give them the right tools they need for the job,” said Shay Moradi, vice president of automotive engineering. and joint experimental technology.

Vital Auto uses a wide variety of 3D printers, including 14 FDM printers, 3 stereoscopic (SLA) printers and 5 selective laser sintering (SLS) printers. In addition to flashy parts like door handles and brake calipers, the company also has the ability to 3D print door seals out of soft rubber. This significantly shortened the time to build a concept car. “Usually, when using a CNC machine, we have to wait 2-4 days. In most cases, 3D printing allows us to have the right part in less than 24 hours,” design engineer Anthony Barnicott, knows.
