There are not 1,000 car buyers

According to statistics from the Vietnam Register, in 2021 there will be 9 provinces buy car at least in the whole country, less than 1,000 vehicles of all kinds in each locality.

Specifically, Lai Chau province ranked 63rd with 639 cars, Hau Giang ranked 62nd with 668 cars, Bac Lieu ranked 61st with 704 cars, Bac Kan ranked 60th with 708 cars, Tra Vinh ranked 59th with 829 cars, Electricity Bien ranked 58th with 878 vehicles, Soc Trang ranked 57th with 906 vehicles, Ninh Thuan ranked 56th with 937 vehicles, Kon Tum ranked 55th with 975 vehicles.

In total, these 9 provinces bought 7,244 cars, accounting for 2.3% of the market share of passenger cars with 9 seats or less, equivalent to the number of the small province of Bac Ninh and far behind the provinces of Ha Tinh and Thanh Hoa. , Nghe An. Compared to Hanoi, which bought 50,928 cars, accounting for 16% of the market share, it is even further.

For the whole year, 1,000 people can't buy cars, many provinces regret the 'disparity'
The price of Vietnamese cars is nearly double that of countries like Thailand and Indonesia.

These provinces are mainly located in the northern mountainous region and the Mekong Delta, and the two central provinces and the Central Highlands have a sparse population, less than 1 million people. The northern mountainous area and Kon Tum have many hills and mountains, and the transport infrastructure has not been developed. Of these, there are 3 provinces in the top 10 poor provinces: Dien Bien, Kon Tum and Soc Trang. The per capita income of these 9 provinces is from 70 million VND/year or less.

With the northern mountainous provinces, due to the high mountain topography, transportation has not been developed and many ethnic minorities are still living in poverty. It is not easy to have a few decent motorbikes and televisions for each family, not even daring to dream of a car. Cars are concentrated only in urban areas of the province.

As for the Mekong Delta provinces, which are already located in the area with a high percentage of households car ownership lowest in the country. According to the results of the 2019 Housing Population Census of the General Statistics Office, on average, the whole country has 5.7% of total households with a car, of which the lowest is the Mekong Delta with 2.5%.

A representative of the Vietnam Automobile Manufacturers Association (VAMA) said that the above localities have low annual sales, due to low demand and small market size. The number of customers who buy cars of all kinds in the whole province a year is equivalent to the sales of cars of a dealer in a big city.

Some car dealers in the northern mountainous area admitted that sales were not as expected and had to reduce prices and promote more to stimulate demand, even having to bring cars to the lowlands to sell.

Too out of reach

Mr. Le Van Toan, a physician in Ho Chi Minh City. Ha Giang, using a pickup truck, commented that it is very suitable for mountainous terrain. Thanks to this car, day by day, he can go to the forest to find medicinal plants, fill up the trunk and carry it back. It is really helpful at work. Toan said he had been to Northern Thailand, where there were many hills and mountains like Vietnam, every household had a car, mainly pickup trucks. Farmers working in the fields also use pick-ups to carry tools and agricultural products to the market.

According to Mr. Toan, for the Northern mountainous region, pickup trucks are very suitable, the economy is developing, if any family has a car, it will help increase productivity and income. However, the price of cars in Vietnam is too high, a 2-wheeler pickup currently purchased and registered for the lowest also costs about 700 million VND, it is too far out of reach compared to the income of most people here.

According to statistics, the item that bears the most tax burden today is a personal car with 9 seats or less.

Personal cars are subject to 3 main taxes: import tax, excise tax and value added tax. These are all indirect taxes, to be paid by car buyers. Moreover, these three taxes are also imposed on top of each other, so they usually account for 30-60% of the selling price, depending on the car model.

In addition, car buyers also have to bear an additional registration fee of 10-12%, calculated on the selling price depending on the locality, not to mention other fees.

Calculating, the price of Vietnamese cars is nearly twice as high as that of countries like Thailand and Indonesia, and this number is even larger than that of developed countries like the US, Japan, etc. With the above provinces, people People have to fast for a decade to buy a pick-up truck with a selling price of 700 million VND. Meanwhile, the land “fever” doesn’t seem to have pulled over here.

The comments show that Vietnam is entering the stage of automobileization with an average GDP of over 3,000 USD/person/year. It is forecasted that in 2025, the market size will reach from 800,000 to 900,000 vehicles per year and from 1.2 to 1.5 million vehicles by 2030, surpassing Malaysia, even Thailand, to rise to the top position. second in the region.

With the goal of becoming a middle-income country by 2030, cars will be a popular means of transportation. However, perhaps universalizing cars with the above localities is too far, because the distance compared to other localities is quite large.

Expert Nguyen Minh Dong said that these localities need to accelerate economic development, helping to increase people’s income. Along with that is to reduce car prices, or to have subsidies from the State if you want to quickly close the above gap.
