Ukraine cannot meet the requirements of Russia’s ultimatum

Ukrinform news agency on March 21 reported, in a recent interview with European media, President Ukraine Volodymyr Zelensky stated that Kyiv was “unable to meet the requirements of the Federation’s ultimatum Russia“.

According to the Ukrainian leader, meeting Russia’s ultimatum requires “the Ukrainian people to be completely annihilated”.

Zelensky said: “Ukraine will not be able to implement the ultimatum [của Nga]. We won’t be able to do that. How can we do it? We will all be destroyed – then their ultimatum will automatically be fulfilled.”

“For example, they [Nga] said: ‘Give us Kharkiv, give us Mariupol, give us Kyiv’. Neither the residents of Kharkiv, the residents of Mariupol, the residents of Kyiv nor the President can do it,” the Ukrainian leader explained.

“Even occupied towns. In Melitopol, Berdyansk, when [quân Nga] entered, the Ukrainian people did not give up. [Quân Nga] Flag raising [Nga]then the people took it down again. […] Yes, the people went into hiding, but at night they came back and lowered the Russian flag again,” Zelensky added.

President Zelensky also stressed that ultimatums will not bring Russia any results in the military conflict with Ukraine.

Earlier, Ukraine’s Deputy Prime Minister Iryna Vereshchuk said that the Russian Defense Ministry had sent a dispatch to Ukraine, which issued an ultimatum demanding that Ukrainian forces lay down their weapons and withdraw from Mariupol before 5 am on 21/05. 3 in return for the evacuation of civilians.

Mariupol, a strategic port city of more than 400,000 people, has been besieged by Russian forces in recent days. The place was short of food, medicine, electricity and water.

However, Deputy Prime Minister Vereshchuk and Mariupol City Mayor Piotr Andryushchenko announced on March 21 that Ukraine refused to implement Russia’s ultimatum, resolutely “not surrendering or laying down arms” and demanded that Russia establish open humanitarian corridors.

According to Reuters, on March 21, Ukraine’s Defense Minister Oleksii Reznikov praised the “courage of heroes” in Mariupol for stopping the Russian advance into other cities, “saving dozens of lives” thousands of lives across Ukraine”. Now Mariupol is saving Kyiv, Dnipro and Odesa,” Reznikov said.

Russia launched what it calls a “special military operation” in Ukraine on February 24. President Zelensky declared martial law and ordered a general mobilization in the country.
