Can Covid-19 patients who have taken Molnupiravir continue to take it when re-infected?

Reinfection with Covid-19 occurs when an infected person is infected with different variants of the SARS-CoV-2 virus. Particularly with the Omicron variant, people infected with the BA.1 subline can still be reinfected with BA.2 and BA.3.

When re-infection Covid-19 more and more common, the question is whether reinfected F0 can take antiviral drugs or not?

Doctor CKI. Nguyen Thanh Phong, Head of Department of Infection D, Hospital for Tropical Diseases, Ho Chi Minh City replied: “Usual use! People who are re-infected with Covid-19 can take the drug Molnupiravir as a new case”.

According to Dr. Phong, there is currently no exact formula for the interval between two doses of the antiviral drug Molnupiravir. However, reinfection with Covid-19 usually occurs 2-3 months after a person has been infected with Covid-19 before. This is enough time for the first drug to be completely eliminated from the body.

People with Covid-19 who took Molnupiravir can continue to use it when re-infected?
Many people in Ho Chi Minh City are re-infected with Covid-19 due to the Omicron variant.

“The fact that patients do not re-infect after a few weeks, but usually after a few months, so they can take the second medicine without too much worry. As long as that F0 must be in accordance with the instructions as directed by the Ministry of Health and the treating doctor, “doctor Nguyen Thanh Phong said.

Meanwhile, Assoc. Prof. Dr. Do Van Dung, Dean of the Faculty of Public Health, University of Medicine and Pharmacy, Ho Chi Minh City, said that the first F0 treatment and reinfection are not related much. Each treatment will be considered a new illness. Reinfection less than 60 days is very rare.

Therefore, F0 can take Molnupiravir at the next infection, but it needs to be the right target, the dose, and not quit halfway.

In case F0 takes the drug for 5 days according to the prescribed course but the test is still positive, experts say that there is no need to worry or find another alternative medicine. Molnupiravir has the effect of killing and inhibiting the growth of the virus, there may be residual virus causing the test to be positive.

“When using the full dose of Molnupiravir, the patient’s body has received the best treatment. The body was able to produce natural antibodies to destroy the remaining virus in the body, “said Associate Professor Do Van Dung.

Currently, Molnupiravir is considered the most popular antiviral drug to treat Covid-19. However, the Ministry of Health warned that not all cases positive for SARS-CoV-2 have been treated with Molnupiravir.

Accordingly, this antiviral drug is used for Covid-19 patient are 18 years or older with mild to moderate disease and at least one risk factor for progression of the disease.

Doctors said that currently, symptoms of Covid-19 in people who have been vaccinated, not in the high-risk group, are usually quite mild. Mainly chills, fatigue, low-grade fever, sore throat, appear for a few days. Symptoms of loss of smell and taste are less common in people infected with Omicron.

However, Covid-19 patients are still at risk of becoming seriously ill. Therefore, patients need to monitor for signs of decreased SpO2. If the index is still above 95%, it is recommended to walk for 5 to 10 minutes to detect potential SpO2 reducers (at this time SpO2 will decrease below 95%) for timely treatment.

Particularly, current oral antiviral drugs such as Molnupiravir or Favipiravir should only be used for the first 5 days and should be used when F0 shows signs of worsening such as a lot of cough, great fatigue, no fever reduction and SpO2 drops below 95%.

On March 21, Ms. Nguyen Thi Huynh Mai, Chief of the Office of the Health Department of Ho Chi Minh City, said that the city currently does not have statistics on cases of re-infection with Covid-19 but will manage and treat it as a new infection.

“F0 cases of re-infection with SARS-CoV-2 still need to be isolated at home or treated at a hospital within 7 days. If the test on the 7th is negative, they will be allowed to return to work and normal activities, Those who are positive will need to be monitored for another 3 days,” Mai said.
