Ho Chi Minh City has three entrance exams for grade 10

The general 10th grade entrance exam takes place on June 11 and 12 with three subjects Mathematics, Literature and Foreign Languages, all with a coefficient of 1.

On March 22, the Ho Chi Minh City People’s Committee issued a student admission plan for the start of the 2022-2023 school year. Admission to grade 10 is regulated by the entrance examination method, applicable to students who graduate from high school in the city, within the specified age range.

Students are allowed to apply up to three aspirations to secondary schools (except for Le Hong Phong, Tran Dai Nghia and Talented Middle School, Vietnam National University, Ho Chi Minh City). Students are advised to choose a school that is close to their place of residence, to avoid being accepted but not studying. Students are not allowed to change their wishes after being accepted.

Ho Chi Minh City gives priority plus 1-2 points to prospective child martyrs, war disabled who have lost their working capacity, Heroes of the armed forces, Heroes of labor, ethnic minorities, and candidates who are ethnic minorities. Plus points for students who enjoy a priority regime of no more than 3.

Time to do Mathematics, Literature 120 minutes; Foreign Language 90 minutes. The content of the exam is in the high school curriculum, especially in grade 9. The test score is the total score of each question in the exam, calculated on a 10-point scale, with odd points to 0.25.

Entrance marks are the sum of three test scores, calculated by a factor of one and plus priority points. The successful candidate must complete all three exams and none of them get a zero score.

In addition to regular high schools, Ho Chi Minh City specializes in class 10 enrollment with the requirement that the candidate has graduated from high school with good grades, good conduct and academic ability in grades 6-8 and above. Le Hong Phong High School for the Gifted accepts students who graduate from secondary schools in other provinces and cities to take the exam.

After completing the three basic subjects of the 10th grade entrance exam, candidates take an additional exam with a time limit of 150 minutes. The score for admission to special classes is the sum of three points in Mathematics, Literature, and Foreign Languages ​​(coefficient 1) plus points for special subjects (factor 2).

In 2021, due to Covid-19, the Ho Chi Minh City People’s Committee cancel exam Class 10 enrollment after much delay. More than 83,000 candidates are considered for entry into grade 10 with an average grade of 9 in subjects such as Literature, Mathematics and Foreign Languages.

Every year, Ho Chi Minh City has about 100,000 candidates graduating from high school; 80% of them apply for the 10th grade entrance examination. The target of 115 public schools in Ho Chi Minh City is around 65,000-67,000, so about 15,000 students fail 10th grade every year.

Children who cannot enter the public sector can continue their education to private secondary schools, secondary education centers or secondary and vocational schools.
