On March 23, the Hanoi People’s Court opened a trial and sentenced defendant Le Van Dung (52 years old, residing in Hanoi, also known as Le Van Dung). Dung “Vova”) 5 years in prison for propaganda against the State of the Socialist Republic of Vietnam.
In the same case, defendant Nguyen Van Son (66 years old, residing in Hanoi, uncle of Le Dung “Vova”) was sentenced to 18 months in prison but given a suspended sentence for concealing crimes.
According to the accusation, Mr. Le Van Dung is a person who has a history of participating in mass gatherings, causing public disorder and often disrupting anti-State demonstrations.
During the period from 2010 to 2012, defendant Dung was three times issued an administrative sanction by the Hoan Kiem District Police (Hanoi) for causing public disorder.
From March 2017 to September 2018, the accused made and uploaded 12 video clips on the Internet with the content of propagating information, distorting the lines and policies of the State, defaming the people’s administration, propagating theories of psychological warfare, spreading fabricated news to cause confusion among the people; Insulting the honor and prestige of the Party and State leaders.
At the investigation agency, Mr. Dung confessed that in 2017 he created a social network account named “Alfonso vova”, used to post the above content. These videos, Mr. Dung claimed, were staged, filmed and distributed by himself.
In May 2021, Mr. Dung fled and was issued a special wanted notice by the investigative agency.
Meanwhile, defendant Nguyen Van Son admitted that he knew Dung was wanted, but when Dung came to his house to ask to stay, Mr. Son did not report to the authorities, but agreed to let Dung stay and cook for him.
On June 30, 2021, the two defendants were arrested together at Mr. Son’s home, in Phuong Tu commune, Ung Hoa district, Hanoi.
