Due to the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic, the number of organ transplant surgeries has plummeted worldwide, with kidney, lung and liver transplants falling the most. In England, the number of these surgeries is down 20% in 2020.

However, Professor Paolo Grossi, an infectious disease expert from the University of Insubria in Varese, Italy, said there was growing evidence that organs donated by COVID-19 patients were “safe” for use in organ transplants. Even organs from donors with COVID-19 can be considered if their COVID-19 condition is asymptomatic and the virus is not the cause of death.

According to Professor Grossi, based on growing evidence around the world, scientists believe that organs from people who have been infected or are currently infected with COVID-19 can be considered for use in patients waiting for treatment. organ transplant recipients who have acquired immunity to the SARS-CoV-2 virus through previous infection or vaccination. Professor Grossi said that there have been 10 people who have received organ (liver) transplants from COVID-19 patients in Italy, including 2 people with COVID-19 and 8 people with the disease. Of these, 1 patient after an organ transplant died from an infection and 9 others are still continuing to recover.

According to Professor Grossi, using the organs of COVID-19 patients will significantly increase the list of people who can donate organs. Professor Grossi will bring this topic up for discussion at the European Society of Clinical Microbiology and Infectious Diseases conference taking place from March 23 to 26 in Lisbon (Portugal).
