President Putin says the West’s freezing of Russian assets is “illegal”

Radio Sputnik (Russia) said, speaking at a meeting with the Russian government today (March 23), President Vladimir Putin said that in recent weeks, many Western countries have taken the “illegal” decision to freeze Russian assets.

Last week, Russian Finance Minister Anton Siluanov confirmed that about $300 billion of Russia’s foreign exchange and gold reserves had been frozen due to Western sanctions. President Putin said that this has really lost confidence in the domestic currency of the West.

According to the Russian leader, in principle, through “illegal actions to ‘freeze’ the assets of Russia, the US and the European Union (EU) have basically declared no obligation to repay the debt.” Russia. So the fact that Russia supplies goods to the EU and the US and receives payments in dollars and euros doesn’t make any sense to us anymore.”

Currently, “everyone in the world knows or suspects that repayment in dollars and euros may not be possible,” President Putin said.

President Putin ordered the Central Bank of Russia and the Russian government to find ways to change the ruble payment method for gas in countries “unfriendly” to Moscow, and asked Gazprom to amend the existing contract accordingly.

“Russia will continue to export natural gas by volume and price as in the previously signed contract,” Putin stressed, “because we value credibility.”

It is estimated that Russia exports 10 billion USD worth of gas per month. In 2021, the EU imported $108 billion of energy from Russia, accounting for about 62% of total consumption in the continent.
