Principal of TH School system receives Alumni Award

HanoiGS. dr. Nguyen Khanh Dieu Hong, Vietnam Chancellor of the TH School system, is the winner of the Alumni Award in the “Science and Sustainability” category for his contribution to society.

The female professor said she followed the award to inspire many young people to pursue education and careers related to STEM subjects (Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics).

“I really want to share my experience and thank my school – University College London,” he added.

According to GS. dr. Nguyen Khanh Dieu Hong, British education changed his life. In 2004, he graduated from Hanoi University of Science and Technology with an orientation to become a chemical engineer in Vietnam. Prior to that, he won a Gold Medal in International Chemistry and received a scholarship to study abroad.

With a passion for England, Dieu Hong studied abroad on a full scholarship from University College London (UCL). This decision helped him to become Professor of Renewable Energy. During his studies in England, he realized that this field was very important, but it was not popular in Vietnam at that time.

After studying, he returned to Vietnam and began working as a lecturer at the Hanoi University of Science and Technology. The young female professor began building curricula and research on clean fuels and green chemistry to teach undergraduate, masters, and graduate students. He has published six books in this area, two of them by the New York Press, and has sold at least 2,000 copies.

To date, the female professor and doctorate has more than 18 years of teaching and research experience in the field of clean energy and fuels at universities in Vietnam with nearly 1,000 graduates.

Apart from teaching, Dieu Hong has also successfully mentored 33 masters and 9 doctorates in this research field, carried out 10 research projects and co-authored and co-authored 8 patents.

Two of the most prominent projects he worked on with his colleagues in Vietnam have solved the problem of oil refinery waste in Vietnam. The team then transferred the technology to the factory, which processes tons of waste every day. In 2020, he was one of 25 national intellectuals to receive the Prime Minister’s Certificate of Appreciation.

This is also the benchmark for judging the 2021-2022 Alumni Awards jury. “I pay a lot of attention to how their ideas affect society. It’s all about thinking creatively and getting out of your comfort zone,” said Nguyen Trung Dung – Director General of BK Holdings, member of the association, shared by the jury.

In addition to teaching and research, the TH School Principal system also develops inspirational projects for young people in the STEM field. Since 2015, he has been the Managing Director of Go-Green Foundation Vietnam to support young scientists, inventors and students; develop partnerships in science and innovation, promote economic development and prosperity of Vietnam.

According to GS. dr. Nguyen Khanh Dieu Hong, to achieve this feat, he has used a lot of resources from British education. First, UCL and the British Royal Academy have provided him with the basics of research, from planning, reading documents, writing essays to writing research papers. Most importantly, here he learned how to become an independent research scientist and build his own strong team.

Second, British education also helps PhD students to build their confidence. The learning environment here gives students the freedom to be creative in research, without fear of making mistakes.

“I was able to present my research views and get a lot of support from my teachers and colleagues. I’m free in my mind, so confidence grows the most,” she shares.

Third, while studying and working in the UK, he has the opportunity to interact with many different people and work styles in a multicultural environment. Since then, he has strengthened his ability to adapt in any situation.

He also takes pride in studying at a world renowned school for its quality training, student experience and many other resources.

During the award ceremony, UCL representatives also sent their congratulations to the former graduate student. “Prof. Dr. Nguyen Khanh Dieu Hong is one of the representatives of UCL. We are happy to help you build your career in the green energy sector. This is a testament to the effort and determination that you too are like any other UCL student yourself” .
