Ms. Zakharova stated: “We declare that there are no plans to continue negotiations on a peace treaty with Japan. That is obvious because there is no way to discuss signing a basic document for the parties. bilateral relationship with a country that openly expresses a lack of goodwill”.

According to her, Tokyo is “seeking to selectively harm” Russian interests. “Given the current situation and the approach of the Japanese leadership, it is impossible to talk about developing such documents,” she stressed.

On March 21, the Russian Foreign Ministry announced that Moscow decided to withdraw from the peace treaty negotiation process with Tokyo after Japan imposed sanctions on Russia over the conflict in Ukraine.

Russia also announced it was withdrawing from negotiations with Japan on joint economic projects on the disputed islands, which Moscow calls the Southern Kurils, while Japan calls the Northern Territories.

Before Russia’s move, on March 22, the Japanese Foreign Ministry summoned Russian Ambassador to Tokyo Mikhail Galuzin to protest.

Earlier, Japanese Foreign Minister Hayashi Yoshimasa also said that Russia’s efforts to link Japan’s response to events in Ukraine with Moscow-Tokyo bilateral relations are incorrect and unacceptable. .
