The Chinese plane tore through the wind at the speed of sound when it crashed into the ground

According to data from aircraft tracking website FlightRadar24, the crashed Chinese Boeing 737-800 was flying at a speed of more than 966 km / h, sometimes exceeding 1,126 km / h.

After reviewing flight data, Bloomberg reported that the China Eastern Airlines plane that crashed on March 21 flew close to the speed of sound for a moment before crashing down a hillside. .

Such an impact could make it more difficult for investigators because it destroys evidence and, in rare cases, can damage aircraft data as well as voice recording equipment, which is designed to withstand most crashes.

John Hansman, a professor of aeronautics and astronautics at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, who reviewed Bloomberg’s calculations of the plane’s speed, said: “Preliminary data suggests the plane was moving. close to the speed of sound when hitting the ground”.

Sound travels at a speed of 1,224 km/h at sea level but slows down proportionally with altitude and as the air temperature decreases, to 1,066 km/h at an altitude of 10,668 meters. The Chinese plane that crashed going from Kunming to Guangzhou with 132 people, was at an altitude of nearly 9,000 meters and then suddenly lowered its altitude. Before diving, the plane moved at a speed of 960 km/h.

The above speed data is consistent with those recorded in the last minute of the aircraft. At that time, the plane plunged down at an almost vertical angle and then crashed to the ground with great force.

Zhu Tao, an official with the Civil Aviation Administration of China, said on March 22 that the voice recorders on the plane had not been found. Searchers will not receive beacons or pings from the device as they are only activated while underwater.
