The Danish runner finished in the top 10 despite falling into the abyss

SpanishMattias Skjelmose finished in the top 10 of the second stage of Volta a Catalunya, despite falling 58km from the finish line.

While descending the hill and turning a corner, Mattias hit the wall that served as a barrier, and then fell into a ravine. However, the Danish cyclist was not seriously injured, and was carrying a bicycle on his head trying to get back on the road, when rescue teams came to help.

“I’m fine, I’m fine. Just give me a new bike,” he said, trying to get onto the pavement to get back into competition.

Regarding the following incident, Skjelmose said after the race: “Antwan Tolhoek and I were in a pretty good position, just behind the UAE team going downhill. Then someone made a mistake on the brakes and unfortunately, and I fell off a cliff. Luckily I didn’t seriously injured. I immediately got back on track, and Antwan helped me to the finish line.”

Tolhoek also fell in that declining area. He heard on the radio that Skjelmose had an accident, but had no idea where his 21-year-old team-mate was. “I wanted to find my bike, but Skjelmose was somewhere I didn’t know. Then I walked to safety, and I saw him climbing.”

Skjelmose’s team said the 21-year-old fell between 10 and 15 metres, before climbing back up the cliff to get back on track. At that time, Skjelmose had 58 km remaining on the 203 km race route. Even so, he still finished in 10th place after getting a new motorbike and being supported by teammate Tolhoek and being brought back to the big group.

“If there’s one good thing about this crash, it’s that I’m flooded with adrenaline, and it’s probably the best pain reliever,” Skjelmose added. “I really don’t feel anything. I think I have a guardian angel today, because I feel fine now. Anyway, my legs are healthy enough to keep playing. So there you go. Good. I’m very lucky.”

Volta a Catalunya is a road cycling race held annually in Catalonia, Spain. It is one of the three stages of the World Tour in Spain, alongside the Vuelta a Espana and the Basque Country Tour.
