China Eastern Airlines Boeing 737-800 flight MU5735 crashed in Guangxi while en route from Kunming to Guangzhou on March 21. At the time of the crash, the plane was carrying 132 people, including 123 passengers and nine crew members.

Rescue work was carried out by Chinese authorities through the night of March 21, but a day after the accident happened, the rescue team still had not found any victims. At the scene, plane debris and some personal items were found.

Chinese state media described the situation as looking “bad” and did not rule out the possibility that all passengers and crew were killed.

The accident is not only a shock in terms of the potential for casualties, but also because China has rarely recorded such serious incidents in the past two decades.

In the last 20 years, China’s civil aviation has been generally rated as safe thanks to the world’s largest investment, application of the most stringent procedures and possession of the latest aircraft.

The Civil Aviation Administration of China said that as of February 19, passenger airlines in China had set a record world operating for 100 million hours for 137 months without a major accident.

Before March 21, the last fatal plane crash occurred on August 24, 2010, when a Henan Airlines plane from Harbin crashed while approaching the airport in the province. Sand forest. The ERJ-190 plane landed in low visibility, a few hundred meters from the runway, broke in half and killed 44 of the 96 people on board.

The last major crash before the incident occurred 2,102 days earlier, when another China Eastern Airlines flight crashed seconds after taking off from Baotou. The Bombardier CRJ-200 crashed into a lake near the airport and exploded, killing all 53 people on board and two on the ground.

During the 1980s and 1990s, China regularly recorded fatal plane crashes.

In Guangxi alone, there were two major accidents. In 1982, a China Southern Airlines plane crashed in Gongcheng district, killing 112 people on board. Ten years later, another China Southern Airlines plane crashed in Yangshuo county, killing 141 people.

The peak was in 2002, when two Chinese planes crashed in a row within a month, one of which was over South Korea on April 15 and the other over Dalian on May 7. The total death toll in these two accidents is 234, a figure that has shocked China, prompting the country to introduce stricter safety rules.

According to VariFlight, about 74% of the 11,800 flights scheduled to China today have been cancelled, the majority of which are connecting flights between Beijing and Shanghai – one of the few busiest domestic flight route in the world.

Out of 35 flights scheduled from the airport in Shanghai to Beijing on March 22, only two flights operated in the morning and three others took off on the same day. All remaining flights have been cancelled. Meanwhile, only 5 out of 34 flights from Beijing to Shanghai are scheduled to operate.

Before the latest plane crash, China’s aviation industry was hit hard by restrictive measures related to the Covid-19 epidemic, leading to a high cancellation rate. However, the cancellation rate on March 22 was still the highest this year and double the figure earlier this month.
