Japanese car manufacturer Toyota Motor Corp. said on March 22 that eight of its vehicle assembly lines in Japan will be shut down for two more days due to the impact of last week’s strong earthquake in the northeast of the country.

The shutdown of six plants from March 24 follows Toyota’s earlier announcement that 18 lines at 11 plants will be shut down for up to three days from March 21-23. Toyota estimates that the shutdown will result in a decrease in output of about 30,000 vehicles, an increase of about 10,000 vehicles from its previous estimate.
The previous estimate took into account the effects of the temporary closure of two factories in the northeastern region of Japan following the magnitude 7.4 earthquake on March 16.
A total of 19 lines at 12 factories, including production lines for RAV4, Land Cruiser and Lexus-branded luxury vehicles, have been affected by the earthquake outage.

An earthquake off the coast of Fukushima Prefecture killed three people and injured more than 200, as well as causing power outages and traffic disruptions.
