Using doping, Kazakh weightlifter was stripped of Olympic gold
At the 2016 Rio Olympics in Brazil, Nijat Rahimov competed in the 77kg weight class. The Kazakh athlete won the gold medal and set a world record with a 214kg push. However, in early 2021, the international doping agency (ITA) confirmed that there were traces of banned substances in the athlete’s sample.

On March 22, 2022, the Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS) issued a final decision, including a decision to strip the Rio 2016 Olympic gold medal and an eight-year ban from competition for Nijat Rahimov. The 28-year-old athlete also lost all achievements at all tournaments he attended since March 15, 2016 and can only play again in January 2029.

This is not the first time Nijat Rahimov has been heavily fined for violating anti-doping regulations. In June 2013, this athlete was banned from competing for 2 years for the same reason. Returning from the ban, Nijat Rahimov had no trouble in his journey to winning the 2015 World Championships Gold Medal.
