Ukraine’s infrastructure was devastated after Russian attacks

According to the AP news agency, the Ukrainian government is still standing while its forces are still fighting Russian troops in many locations. Observers said that after a month of attacking Ukraine, Russia was bogged down in a military campaign increasingly costly and uncertain, showing no sign of ending and besieged by sanctions.

This week, US President Joe Biden and key allies will hold talks in Brussels, Belgium and Warsaw, Poland to discuss new sanctions against Russia as well as additional military support for Ukraine.

Constantly being repelled by Ukrainian units, the Russian military is now shelling targets from a distance, returning to the previous tactics that the country used in Syria. Russia’s main strategic goals remain unfulfilled: Ukraine’s capital, Kiev, has been hit by repeated attacks, but is not yet besieged.

Today, Kiev continued to come under a barrage of shelling, clouds of black smoke rising from the western suburbs, where the two sides are fighting for control of a series of suburbs. According to the Kiev city government, a shopping center and several buildings were attacked, injuring four people.

Oleksandr Markushyn, mayor of the city of Irpin, a northwestern suburb of Kiev, said that 80% of the area is already under the control of the Ukrainian armed forces. Speaking on Ukrainian television, Mr. Markushyn said: “Our city is under continuous bombardment by the GRAD system. It’s massive. They’re attacking residential areas, multi-storey buildings.”

In the south, after weeks of siege and bombardment, the port city of Mariupol was the hardest hit by the war. So far, however, Ukraine’s defense forces have prevented its collapse. This prevents Russia from opening a permanent and secure land link from the Crimean peninsula.

Ukrainian President Zelensky said that 10,000 civilians are still in the devastated city. Repeated attempts to deliver food and other supplies to those trapped frequently failed.

A US defense official, who asked not to be named, gave the Pentagon’s assessment as follows, Russian warships in the Sea of Azov are still shelling Mariupol.

To the north of the capital Kiev, Russian forces bombed and destroyed a bridge that spans the Desna river and connects the city of Chernihiv with Kiev, Chernihiv region governor Viacheslav Chaus said today. Chernihiv, with a population of nearly 290,000, has been besieged by Russian troops for 12 days, currently without electricity, water, gas, destroyed infrastructure.
