According to the updated global COVID-19 situation report published by the World Health Organization (WHO) on March 22, the number of new cases in the week of March 14-20 globally was 12,384.30 ca, up 7% from the previous week.

The disease spread the most in the Western Pacific region, with 6,055,914 new cases in the week, up 21%, stable in Europe and declining in the Eastern Mediterranean (down 41%), Europe. Africa (down 33%), Southeast Asia (down 23%), Americas (down 17%).

Calculating on a per country and territory basis, South Korea recorded the highest number of new cases in a week, with 2,817,214 cases. Countries with a sharp increase in the number of new cases include Germany (up 1,538,666 cases), France (up 582,344 cases), Australia (513,388 cases).

The number of deaths from COVID-19 globally in the week from March 14-20 continued to decrease, with a total of 32,959 cases, corresponding to a decrease of 23% compared to the previous week. The countries with the highest number of deaths are Russia (3,681 cases, down 19%), the US (3,612 cases, down 58%), Brazil (2,242 cases, down 32%), South Korea (2,033 cases, up 41%). .

Regarding the spread of the virus strain of concern, the results of genetic sequencing in the past 30 days posted on the GISAID system show that Omicron is the dominant variant, accounting for 99.8% of cases globally, followed by is Delta (0.1%). In which, the sub-variant of Omicron called BA.2 (stealth Omicron variant) accounts for the most proportion, with 85.96%.
