Information from the National Children’s Hospital on the afternoon of March 24 stated that recently, doctors at the hospital received contacts from colleagues at Hung Vuong General Hospital (Phu Tho) about the baby’s choking. Critical foreign body was transferred to the emergency room in critical condition. Immediately after that, the doctors prepared all the requirements to receive, treat, and provide first aid to the baby upon arrival at the hospital. However, when the baby had not been transferred to the National Children’s Hospital, its circulation stopped and died outside the hospital.
Previously, on the evening of March 23, Hung Vuong General Hospital received a 5-year-old girl, who lives in Tuyen Quang, after eating peanuts, she looked purple and had difficulty breathing. The family gave first aid but it was not effective, so they immediately transferred the baby to the Hung Vuong Hospital clinic, Phu Tho for an emergency.

Here, the girl was in a state of circulatory arrest outside the hospital, her pupils dilated. The time from when she started showing signs of shortness of breath until she approached the doctors and nurses was about 15-20 minutes. Immediately, the emergency emergency was activated, about 3 minutes later, the girl’s pulse and blood pressure returned.
As soon as the girl’s vital signs stabilized in line with the wishes of the family, a team including emergency doctors and nurses were present to take the girl to an ambulance and transferred to the National Children’s Hospital in the evening.
In line with the emergency to ensure the process of transferring the baby to the central hospital, the doctors of Hung Vuong General Hospital actively contacted to report the child’s situation in advance and suggested to be prepared to support the emergency admission to colleagues at the National Children’s Hospital. . Unfortunately, the baby died on the way to the hospital.
Proper and timely first aid is very important
Ths.BS Pham Ngoc Toan (Central Children’s Hospital) said that choking on foreign bodies is very common in young children. Many children are in critical condition and die because they do not get timely and proper first aid. Doctor Toan said that when children choke on a foreign object, they often cough.
– If the child is awake and can cough, it is necessary to encourage the child to cough, then take him to the nearest health facility.
– If the patient wakes up but the cough is not effective, it is necessary to pat the back and press the chest.
+ If the child is young, place the child on the arm, put the head down, then pat the back 5 times to see if the foreign body is out, if not, turn the patient over and press into the chest compression position.
+ Older children can sit on a chair and do the same.
– In case the cough is not possible or the cough is ineffective, check if the child is still breathing, if not, it is necessary:
+ Emergency cardiac tamponade
+ Open the airway
+ Ha breathe 5 times.
+ Then it is necessary to call an additional person for support, someone to give a rescue breath, someone to suppress the heart. The compression position is 1/2 below the sternum.
+ When you need chest compressions, put your hands straight on your chest, ratio of 15 compressions, 2 breaths.
+ After one minute, re-evaluate whether breathing or not and see if there is a pulse by taking the child’s carotid pulse in the arm, radial pulse, and inguinal pulse because the child’s neck is shorter.
+ After 10 seconds of checking, if there is still no pulse, continue chest compressions.
+ During chest compressions, it is necessary to maintain a rhythm of 100 times/minute, try to press deeply and firmly, a decrease of about 1/3 of the thickness of the chest.
