Can Tho planning economic zone ‘airport city’ with a scale of 10,000ha
At a working session with the European Union (EU) delegation in Vietnam on March 22, Mr. Tran Viet Truong, Chairman of Can Tho City People’s Committee said: “Can Tho has neither a sea nor a border gate, so the area The local government does not focus on developing these types of economy. Can Tho has an international airport, so it is planned to have an airport city of 10,000 hectares to reach out to the world.”
According to Truong, in the “airport city”, the locality spends a land fund of about 2,000 hectares to build a center for linking, manufacturing, processing and distributing agricultural products of the Mekong Delta. “In this center, we give priority to building an air logistics system as well as a river port logistics system and a central warehouse system to preserve agricultural products of the Mekong Delta,” he said.
At the same time, according to Mr. Truong, the locality will expand the airport to invest in more related systems to serve agricultural products from the Mekong Delta to Can Tho city for direct export to countries around the world.
Stemming from the above needs, Mr. Truong wishes to cooperate with countries in the EU. In particular, will focus on cooperation in the field of processing, production and consumption of agricultural products as well as cooperation in the production of accessories and components to serve this airport city.
Regarding trade relations with the EU, according to Mr. Truong, last year, Can Tho’s export turnover to the EU market was modest, only about US$126 million with items such as rice, seafood, and pharmaceuticals. , garment products, veterinary drugs, machinery and equipment… Meanwhile, imports from the EU are about 15 million USD with products such as pharmaceutical materials, veterinary drugs, fabrics, vehicles…
Through this meeting, Mr. Giorgio Aliberti, EU Ambassador to Vietnam, wished to explore investment cooperation opportunities with the Mekong Delta in general and Can Tho City in particular, especially in the field of climate change. Clean energy, transport infrastructure…
According to Ambassador Giorgio Aliberti, among the multilateral cooperation programs approved in December last year, there are 11 programs that can be linked and cooperated with Can Tho City.
