Choking to look at the relic when loved ones are still silent

After many days of waiting, dozens of families of victims on China Eastern Airlines flight MU5735 that crashed for the first time were at the scene. They sobbed to call their loved ones missing on the plane that crashed on March 21.

Standing behind a temporary wooden table to place white chrysanthemums and light candles to remember the dead, some people couldn’t contain their emotions but burst into tears, calling their loved ones back in vain.

On March 23, the victims’ families wore umbrellas and raincoats to cross the muddy hilly road to the scene. Torrential rains have stalled rescue efforts and raised fears of landslides.

Weather is not the only obstacle for families wanting to visit the area. Trips are only made with local permission. For the past several days, families have been trying to reach out to know more about the situation of the 132 people on the flight. Previously, local officials had asked them to wait in a pre-arranged hotel room.

The victim's family first came to the scene of the Chinese Boeing 737 crash: Choking to look at the relic when relatives still had no sound - Photo 1.

Zhang Xu’s father, an 18-year-old university student, said: “If they’re alive, we want to see people. If they’re dead, we want the bodies back.”

Wallets and phones were scattered everywhere in the mud, but after many days of searching, there was still no sign of their owner.

While languishing in his hotel room, Zhang’s father took his phone with him to review videos, photos and text messages from his son before he boarded the plane.

Zhang Xu boarded a plane to Kunming to visit his girlfriend without informing his family or teachers in advance. Mr. Zhang was supposed to land in Guangzhou on Monday, but the plane went away and did not return.

The father said: “I am really sad. As a family and as a parent, everyone will want to go to the scene and have a look. My wife told me to bring the relic in memory of our son.” .

On March 22, the Zhang family tried to take a taxi to Lu village, a few kilometers away from where the plane wreckage was discovered, but the local authorities refused to let them in. They burst into tears at the entrance to the village. Firefighters, police and paramedics were waiting there to treat any survivors. They begged for permission to burn incense for Zhang.

Many unknown people tried to help Zhang’s family by driving them to the crime scene by another route, but they were stopped by the police.

Zhang’s father said: “China Eastern Airlines didn’t answer any of our questions or explain anything. They just told us one thing, wait here.”

Finally, the victims’ families were brought to the scene where the plane wreckage was. Under the rain, they couldn’t stop their tears. A man cried: “Remember to go home early!”.

Zhang’s uncle shouted: “Go with me and come home!”

Excavators continued to dig through the ground, searching for signs of life among the 123 passengers and nine crew members still missing.

Finally, after being able to visit the accident scene, the Zhangs were ready to go home and let other families come.

Zhang’s uncle said: “Our request today has been granted. Right now, I have no other request. I will go back and wait for the announcement from the government. If there is progress in the settlement work. research or results, the authorities will let us know and we will be back.”
