Having a child with Thalassemia being treated at the Central Highlands General Hospital, Mr. TVH (residing in village 16, Tan Hoa, Buon Don district, Dak Lak province) said: My son is 7 years old this year, when he was 3 months old. When he was old, he often cried, his family took him to the hospital to examine him, and the doctors concluded that he had Thalassemia. Before 3 years of age, on average, about 3-4 months, the family takes the baby to the hospital once for blood transfusion and iron chelation. The older the baby, the shorter the hospital stay, now he has to go to the hospital once a month. Because of concern for the baby’s health, besides taking the baby to the hospital for treatment, the family also sought to buy all kinds of drugs that were advertised as curing Thalassemia for children.

“There are people who promise to take their medicine to reduce the need for blood transfusions, the disease will be relieved, and only need to have a blood transfusion once every 2-3 months. Seeing that they advertise it’s reputable, the family also tries to borrow money. money to buy medicine for the baby to take, but in reality it didn’t change anything, the baby’s health was still getting weaker and weaker.. I heard someone pointed out where there was a cure for the disease or helped the disease to be relieved, so I ordered it again, but really Health costs a lot of money but the disease still does not decrease, still have to regularly go to the hospital for blood transfusions “- Mr. H. shared.

Grasping the psychology of many parents of children with Thalassemia who want their children to quickly recover from the disease, there are many articles on social networks that advertise remedies to cure the disease or help relieve the disease with the aim of making a profit. Meanwhile, because the patient is not directly examined for an accurate diagnosis, it is easy to lead to the condition of “one disease, another treatment”. Not to mention, the remedies are floating, of unknown origin, expired, even impregnated with toxic chemicals to fight mold and fungus… so that the patient can drink dangerously to their health. and life.

Mr. BVV (residing in Ea H’leo district, Dak Lak province) shared: “My son is 10 years old this year, he was found to have Thalassemia since he was 1 year old. During the time he got the disease, his family also ran. treated in many places, bought male remedies for color for the baby to drink. Expensive a lot of money but still not effective, in the end still had to go to the hospital for a blood transfusion to maintain the child’s life.”

According to Dr. BS Tran Thi Thuy Minh, Head of the Department of General Pediatrics, Central Highlands General Hospital, in recent years, the rate of children coming to the hospital for treatment of Thalassemia is very high. According to statistics at the hospital, more than 400 children have been diagnosed with Thalassemia and continuously treated at the hospital. On average, the hospital receives and treats 20-30 children with Thalassemia every day.

Thalassemia is a disease that cannot be completely stopped, there are many measures to treat the disease and these treatment measures are only available in medical facilities. To date, there is no drug to stop Thalassemia. That is confirmed by the World Federation of Thalassemia as well as by the Association of Specialists in Thalassemia Pathology.

“For families who unfortunately have children with Thalassemia, should go to medical facilities for guidance, treatment, and management in a systematic and continuous manner. Current treatment of Thalassemia is in addition to blood transfusion, iron chelation, treatment. Supportive treatment, internal treatment and some advanced measures such as bone marrow transplant, gene therapy, splenectomy… are all Thalassemia treatments available only in hospitals. Parents should contact the nearest hospital for guidance and timely treatment, there is no folk remedy that can treat this pathology thoroughly,” emphasized Dr.

In Vietnam, it is estimated that currently there are about 20,000 people with Thalassemia major, every year about 2,000 more children are born with Thalassemia disease, about 12 million people carry the Thalassemia gene. Without treatment, Thalassemia causes death very early in childhood; Inadequate treatment can lead to death at 15 – 20 years of age. The cost of treating congenital hemolytic anemia is very expensive.

However, the disease can be prevented when there is sufficient knowledge about the disease and preventive measures are taken by avoiding the birth of children carrying the disease gene from both parents by measures such as: Screening and prevention. Avoid disease early with pre-marital counseling and testing measures. Couples who are about to become pregnant or are pregnant, especially families who have had Thalassemia patients, should receive pre-marital counseling and diagnosis. Screening for early detection of fetal diseases by screening tests and diagnosing genetic mutations during pregnancy. If both husband and wife carry the disease gene, the fetus has a 25% chance of having severe disease, this case should be diagnosed before birth by amniocentesis or chorionic villus sampling and finding genetic mutations. .

For healthy babies, couples should conduct pre-marital counseling and prenatal screening. If the child is unfortunately born with Thalassemia, parents should take the child to a medical facility for treatment and management, absolutely should not use drugs of unknown origin that affect or even endanger the health of the baby. children’s lives.
