The purpose of this book genre is to summarize the book’s contents, helping readers quickly access and absorb the message the book brings. Lean books include: traditional printed books and other formats such as audio, ebook, podcast, infographic, etc., often focusing on history books or multi-volume books edited by the author himself. In addition, a number of classic literary works have also been streamlined to be suitable for teenagers.
The lean book of a professional unit will help users save time, grasp the main idea, and be a suggestion for readers to decide whether to read the original book or not. Book summaries are also considered a form of review, which can be a companion to the reader in the process of discovering the original book.
The market for e-lean books in the world today has made significant progress. The platforms are established, attract a large number of participants and have positive revenue. The top 5 most read apps in the world today include: Blinkist, GetAbstract, Instaread, Soundview and Sumizeit.
In Vietnam, this book genre is still new and has not been developed much. Some publishers organize a summary of a few classic literary titles to serve children or some specific types of books such as: thinking – skills, history, economics,… They work with partner companies for initial approaches to the field of abstracts.
According to the data report, two official companies, W&W and Fonos, currently hold the largest number of lean books in text and spoken format in the country. In addition, about 100 platforms providing abstracts (which have not yet registered for publication under the Publication Law) are also very popular.
The seminar also had discussions and comments from companies, representatives of publish such as: Fonos, Waka, Alpha, Literature Publishing House, Young Publishing House,… The delegates agreed on the view that lean books are a common development trend of the digital world and need a handshake right now. Some difficulties are also noticed by them, but copyright is the most discussed issue.

“The application of the law in this regard also faces many difficulties: Does the implementation of book summaries require the consent of the Author and/or the Copyright Holder?; Is there a confirmation of the act? Is the implementation, exploitation and trading of summary books an infringement of copyright?… If there are strict and clear regulations soon, the development of lean books will enrich the market even more. books and contribute to increasing reading culture in Vietnam,” said Mr. Nam.
Need a solution to promote the direction of lean books
