Russian President Vladimir Putin yesterday made a historic decision when he announced that Russia would only accept payments for gas exports to unfriendly countries in rubles.
The statement immediately caused the gas market of Europe to wobble. Gas prices in some countries of the continent have increased by as much as 30%. Meanwhile, oil prices on the world market also increased by nearly 5%. It is estimated that Russian gas accounts for about 40% of total European consumption. Every day, the continent imports about 200-800 million euros of gas from Russia.
Putin’s decision helped the Russian ruble appreciate to a three-week high at 95 rubles/USD.
Already Bulgaria has announced that it will have no problem paying for Russian gas in rubles.
