Russia, US expel diplomats

Russia yesterday announced the expulsion of an unspecified number of US diplomats in response to Washington’s move to expel 12 employees of Russia’s mission to the United Nations.

The Russian Foreign Ministry said that it had summoned a senior diplomat of the US diplomatic mission in Moscow and handed over a note, including a list of expelled US diplomats. These people are considered unwelcome characters.

This is not the first time Russia and the United States have “tit-for-tat” by expelling diplomats. Other measures include making it difficult for embassies to operate by limiting the number of local staff, the number of people working at the diplomatic missions.

Despite the tense atmosphere, the two sides have not closed all communication channels.
