UN General Assembly calls on Russia to stop its operations in Ukraine

The resolution also echoes statements by United Nations Secretary-General Antonio Guterres, who called for Moscow to “establish a ceasefire and return to the path of negotiations and dialogue”.

The vote comes three weeks after 141 countries adopted a resolution on March 2 demanding that Russia “immediately cease the use of force against Ukraine”. UN General Assembly resolutions are not binding, nor do they affect the military situation in Ukraine, but express the views of countries around the world with Moscow’s military campaign.

Russia has repeatedly denied that it strikes civilian targets in Ukraine, insisting that its forces are only targeting Kiev military facilities in its campaign to “de-militarize and de-fascist” Ukraine.

Speaking at an emergency session of the United Nations General Assembly on March 23, Ambassador Dang Hoang Giang, head of Vietnam’s permanent mission to the United Nations, reiterated Vietnam’s consistent stance in dispute resolution. for international law and the Charter of the United Nations, in particular the principles of respecting the independence, sovereignty and territorial integrity of states, non-interference in internal affairs, non-use of force in international relations, according to VNA.

The Ambassador also emphasized that Vietnam supports international humanitarian efforts and is ready to contribute to the United Nations humanitarian assistance operation for Ukraine under the conditions and capabilities permitted.

Also on March 23, Russia submitted a resolution to the UN Security Council on the humanitarian situation in Ukraine, but it was not approved because it did not receive 9 out of 15 votes in favour. According to diplomats, Russia and China voted in favor of the resolution, but 13 other Security Council members abstained.

The conflict in Ukraine has shown no signs of abating since Russia launched a military operation on February 24. Moscow and Kiev have carried out several rounds of negotiations since the outbreak of the conflict, with active help from a number of countries that have good relations with both sides, but have yet to find a common voice on a peace deal.
