When to provide career guidance to students?

Education experts say that the best time to provide career guidance to students is late 9th grade, early 10th grade.

Currently, most schools in Vietnam provide career guidance for students at the end of high school, while in developed countries like the US… it is often considered late after high school. Dao Minh Hong, Vice Dean of the Faculty of International Relations, University of Economics and Finance (UEF), shared the above information at the seminar “SACE Journey – Unlocking Gen Z”, the first issue of which was broadcast online on March 22.

According to Dr., Vietnam does not follow scientific research, so when grade 12 students apply for a profession, they often feel confused, which leads to random selection and random learning.

Regarding career counseling, Dr. Hong said that parents need to be careful in directing their children, let alone not have a forced attitude, because children often like to do the opposite of what their parents say. In particular, parents who want their children to follow a career must be skilled, such as instead of telling their children to study this or that major, sometimes inviting their children to work together, participating in parental activities, until they gradually absorb and feel familiar with the environment and make decisions voluntarily.

The doctor shared his own experience, back when elementary school children also wanted to guide their children to become teachers, but the children all said in unison, “Mama’s dream, no one follows their profession where” . At that time, she said when she was heartbroken, but instead of forcing it, she chose to skillfully take her children to school, take her children to her mother’s activities, seminars… so that the child is absorbed and gradually becomes familiar with family.environment. As a result, the eldest daughter of Dr. Hong, after completing his bachelor’s degree, said he “wanted to study for a master’s degree and become a teacher like his mother”.

Experts also disagree with the point of view of choosing a “hot” profession. According to dr., when advising young people against class-differentiating values, differentiating values, it means that you are not serious in your choices and decisions.

He cites the fact that someone taught IT and forced him to study the industry because he thought it was a hot profession, following his father’s work, easy to get a job… the kid was obedient and studied until he received a master’s degree. . Right at the diploma acceptance ceremony, the male student handed the diploma to his parents and said, “I have lived all my 30 years for my parents. I gave this diploma to my parents and let me live my life”. After that, the male student worked as a DJ in a bar and now lives a very happy life.

“Let young people determine their own lives, not forcing or forbidding them,” Dr. Hong reminded parents.

Professor Ngo Bao Chau also shared at the seminar on experimenting with career dreams. According to the professor, the “golden” period of career guidance for students is the end of junior high school and the beginning of high school. This timeline may only have a relative meaning, but actual experience will give an accurate answer as to which career is really suitable for each individual.

He believes that career orientation for students should involve the whole family and society. If schools did this work, there would not be enough information for children to choose on the threshold of life.
