Anh Dao: ‘I used to be bored as an actor’

Actor Anh Dao once intended to quit his job, it took four years after graduating from school to land his first role in “Road to the Land of Flowers”.

– What fate brought you to the female lead?

– I have shown the film by director Vu Minh Tri many times but failed. When I started the film project in the middle of last year, Mr. Tri said that my acting style was suitable for Thanh’s character, there was no need to audition again. I was stressed because I was first given a long role, forgot to eat or sleep to study the script, so worried about losing four kilograms. When I got to the set, everything went more smoothly than I imagined, I was quickly integrated into the crew roll, and was mentored and taught by many colleagues.

I was a little surprised because after the broadcast, Thanh’s character appeared too personable, strong, with a lot of talkative speech. When I act, I am not tense, my lines are normal. In real life, I am “more valuable” than Thanh, easily ignore many problems, there is no need to do such a thing.

– How do you incorporate other actors in the film?

– I played Bao’s sister (Mh Quan) even though she is eight years younger than her co-star. I told the director: “Ever since I was a kid, I’ve been watching Mr. British Gold Diary and the idols, who now play sisters, have to kick his ass and pinch his ears.” Fortunately, Mr. Quan is very comfortable, humorous, relaxes me.

With himher Trong Lan (as Loi), I’ve seen a lot of her movies, so I can understand my co-stars’ acting. The first day we met, we filmed Loi being pushed into the water by Dao. Equally shy, that mentality suits his character. They were people who had grown up together since childhood, cursing like dogs and cats, now lips touching lips. In the next episode, we will have more romantic kisses. After the show aired, many people linked me and Trong Lan. I think it’s for the enjoyment of the audience so it’s fine. Actually we’re just friends.

– What do you say when a character is criticized for being monotonous?

– At the time of filming, the epidemic was quite stressful, I could not freely shop for suitable clothes. I’m a new actor again, not many brands are willing to lend costumes. My character has a strong personality, can’t relax, dress up. Therefore, the film crew made Thanh with tied hair, T-shirt and jeans. I think Thanh’s clothes are not very beautiful but safe, suitable for the situation of the characters living in the suburbs. However, repeating the same style of clothing throughout the film is really boring. I think the audience is right, I will absorb and improve it in the next film.

– Not born into a family of artists, what difficulties did you face while pursuing films?

– I grew up in Rural Yen (Bac Giang). In my district, not many people follow the arts, everyone has no concept of the profession of an actor. When I was in high school, I used to act in plays and it was suggested by my friends to try the University of Theater and Cinema exam. I didn’t study properly, I just took the exam by instinct but luckily passed. My homeroom teacher at the time advised me to choose pedagogy, because the acting industry was “fantastic, unrealistic”. However, my parents respected my choice.

When I first entered school, I was overwhelmed by the starting point of my classmates who were much better than me. They grew up in the city, had many conditions for early exposure to the arts, were even born into professional families. When I was a student, I had braces to improve my appearance, and I didn’t have the opportunity to act in movies. In the third year, my family had an accident, my father was seriously ill, my economy was exhausted, I almost dropped out of school. My mother advised me to be persistent and independent. I do a lot of work like clothing business, PG for a living.

After graduating school, I struggled to find opportunities, but for years I had no roles, only playing anonymous characters on screen. I can still live in the city thanks to working on the Le Ngoc stage, an online business. However, I was stressed because I felt like no one knew what I was doing. Whenever I return to my hometown, relatives and neighbors ask me about my work, asking questions such as: “What movie?”, “Why can’t I see it on the screen?”. After the first role, more people know about it, but I haven’t been able to enjoy the feeling. Because of the epidemic, I rarely go home, I always wear a mask when I go out (laughs).

– What are your plans in the near future?

– Right now, I’m focused on working at Le Ngoc Stage. Our unit is the model stage of socialization, do more, enjoy more, work less, enjoy less. With movies, I don’t have a new role yet. Of course, I want to try a lot of pictures. I think every role is life, I have to tell their story to the audience honestly. However, a young face like me doesn’t have much choice. I will cherish every opportunity that comes my way.
