Apple has announced that it plans to purchase carbon-free aluminum from Elysis for use in future iPhone SEs.

The announcement comes after Elysis made major progress allowing their carbon-free aluminum material to be manufactured on an industrial scale. Switching to this aluminum will help the company achieve its goal of becoming carbon-neutral in its entire supply chain by 2030.

Commenting on the news, Lisa Jackson, Apple’s Vice President of Environmental, Policy and Social Initiatives, said: “Apple is committed to making the planet better than we already are, and our Green Bonds are an important tool to move these environmental efforts forward. Our investments are driving the disruptive technologies needed to reduce the carbon footprint of the materials we use, even as we switch to using only recyclable materials and renewable on its products to conserve the finite resources of the earth”.

Since 2016, Apple has issued green bonds with $4.7 billion invested in them. Part of this investment was delivered in 2019 and is currently supporting 50 projects, including the low-carbon aluminum breakthrough. Altogether, the 50 projects are expected to help reduce or offset 2.88 million tons of CO2e, provide 700 megawatts of renewable energy globally, and promote recycling R&D.

Apple worked with Alcoa, Rio Tinto, the governments of Canada, and Quebec to invest in Elysis in 2018. In 2019, Apple purchased the first commercial batch of aluminum and used it to manufacture the 16-inch MacBook Pro. Now, the company says it also wants to use the metal inside iPhone SE.
