Cannavaro can lead Italy

Fabio Cannavaro, the pillar that helped Italy win the 2006 World Cup, is considered a bright candidate to replace Mancini. The 48-year-old star canceled his contract with Chinese club Guangzhou in September 2021. After returning to Europe, Cannavaro has been in negotiations with Everton, Watford and the Polish Football Federation over the past few months. Sources in Italy state that if the FIGC appoints Cannavaro, veteran coach Marcello Lippi will take on the role of Technical Director.

FIGC President Gabriele Gravina said he would not sack Mancini. “I hope Roberto Mancini stays with Italy,” said Gravina. “He has a long-term commitment to us on this project. During the press conference following the defeat to North Macedonia on the evening of 24 March, Mancini refuse to talk about the future. The former Man City coach wants to focus on Italy’s next game before making a decision. However, criticism from Italian public opinion could lead to Mancini ending his contract with the FIGC early.
“I take responsibility for this defeat,” said Mancini after Italy missed the World Cup for the second time in succession. “When a team loses a game, the coach is the first to take responsibility.”
