COVID-19 vaccine does not increase pregnancy complications

This is the result of a new study conducted by the Karrolinska Institute (Sweden) and the Norwegian Institute of Public Health and published in the journal JAMA on March 24.

The team analyzed data from more than 157,000 women who gave birth between January 2021 and January 2022, of whom nearly 20 percent had a COVID-19 shot.

Thereby, the researchers did not find an increase in the risk of preterm birth, developmental delay, low Apgar score (a score of newborn health usually applied to babies immediately after birth) at birth or the need neonatal care in women who received the COVID-19 vaccine during pregnancy.

Previous studies have shown that pregnant women are at a higher risk of requiring intensive care if they have COVID-19 than women of childbearing age who are not pregnant.

Additionally, pregnant women with severe COVID-19 infections are also at increased risk of preterm delivery.

Anne Ortqvist Rosin, a researcher in the Department of Pharmacy, Karolinska Institutet and a co-author of the study, said, “The results of this study are reassuring and hopefully will help pregnant women be more ready for injections. vaccination against COVID-19”.

In addition, maternal vaccination may help prevent hospitalization for COVID-19 in newborns, especially if pregnant mothers are vaccinated later in pregnancy. The study analyzed data from 379 hospitalized children, including 176 children with COVID-19 and 203 children hospitalized for other problems in the US. The study results showed that the COVID-19 vaccine was overall 61% effective in preventing hospitalization in children whose mothers were vaccinated during pregnancy.

That level of protection was increased to 80% when mothers were vaccinated between 21 weeks and 14 days before delivery. Vaccination effectiveness decreased to 32% for children whose mothers were vaccinated earlier in pregnancy.
