Former fisherman Nguyen Huu Viet dies
The swimmer who took home the first swimming gold medal for Vietnam at the SEA Games died suddenly at the age of 34, this morning on March 25.

Huu Viet is the first Vietnamese swimmer to win a SEA Games gold medal, in the 100m breaststroke, with a time of 1 minute 03.80 seconds at the 2005 SEA Games in the Philippines. It was also Vietnam’s only swimming gold medal at the Olympics that year. He was also selected as a typical Vietnamese athlete in 2005.
Huu Viet went on to take home their only gold medals for swimming in Vietnam, also in the 100m breaststroke, at the 2007 SEA Games in Thailand and the 2009 SEA Games in Laos. Where, in 2009, he broke the congressional record with a time of 1 minute 01.60 seconds.
Huu Viet was born on October 1, 1988 in Hai Phong. When he was 16 years old, he participated in the 2004 Olympics in Athens, the 100m breaststroke. In 2008, he also won a place at the Beijing Olympics, all in this skill. During his career, Huu Viet won 3 gold, 1 silver and 1 bronze medals at the SEA Games. He still holds Vietnam’s records in the 50m and 100m breaststroke 50m and 25m, as well as the 4x50m medley relay and 4x100m medley relay.
Huu Viet retired in 2011, at the age of 23, after failing to win a medal at the 26th SEA Games in Indonesia. He has suffered from chronic asthma since childhood, but still strives to compete at the top.
