How much is the effectiveness of 3 doses of COVID vaccine after 4 months? ‘Hot’ data from UK

Yesterday (March 24), the UK Health Security Agency (UKHSA) released new data on the effectiveness of three doses of COVID-19 vaccines in two adult age groups, Reuters news agency reported.

Accordingly, the 3rd dose of the COVID-19 vaccine continues to provide strong protection against the risk of hospitalization for people over 65 years of age nearly 4 months after vaccination.

Specifically, the effectiveness of the third dose of vaccine against the risk of hospitalization in this age group was 85% at 15 weeks after vaccination. This effect at two weeks after injection was 91%.

Medical staff prepare to inject COVID-19 vaccine.

This is the first UK published data on the effectiveness of booster doses of the vaccine. The UK is rolling out a fourth dose of the vaccine for vulnerable age groups. Some other countries like Israel have also made similar moves when the world is facing a more contagious variant of Omicron.

For the 18-64 age group, the vaccine’s effectiveness against hospital admissions appeared to fall even more sharply – to 67% 15 weeks after injection, according to a new report from UKHSA. This figure at two weeks after injection was 88%.

But UKHSA notes: It is possible that many young people are hospitalized for another reason but also have COVID. This could affect the data, making the vaccine appear less effective in this age group.

However, the new report highlights that the effectiveness of the third dose of vaccine in preventing symptomatic COVID-19 infection decreased significantly in all age groups, from about 60-75% after 2-4 weeks after vaccination. 25-40% remaining after 15 weeks.

The UK mainly injects vaccines developed by BioNTech-Pfizer, Moderna and AstraZeneca. The UK’s triple vaccination program, which began last September, already uses the Pfizer and Moderna vaccines.

Earlier, on March 18, the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) also announced the results of a new study on the effectiveness of an mRNA vaccine against the Omicron variant. These are the two main COVID-19 vaccines used in the US – the Pfizer/BioNTech vaccine and the Moderna vaccine.

According to this study, although the vaccine’s effectiveness against the risk of mild Omicron infection gradually decreased, the effectiveness against the risk of hospitalization and death remained high. And those who received the third dose were the most protected.

Specifically, the study found that two doses of the mRNA vaccine were 79% effective in preventing death or mechanical ventilation during the Omicron wave in the US. Meanwhile, three doses of the vaccine were 94% effective. Read the full study results here.
