During the meeting, Security Adviser Doval emphasized the early and complete withdrawal of troops from the disputed border area between the two countries as the key to resolving conflicts. According to him, maintaining the current situation does not serve the common interests of the two countries. Therefore, restoring peace and tranquility will help build mutual trust and create a favorable environment for relations to progress in the future.

For his part, Minister Wang Yi stressed that China and India should stick to their own development paths, and make joint efforts for peace and stability in the region and in the world. He proposes a 3-point approach to achieving that goal. First, both sides should look at the bilateral relationship with a long-term perspective. Second, the development of each party should be considered with a win-win mentality. Third, both countries should engage in the multilateral process in a cooperative spirit.

Also on March 25, speaking to the press after a meeting with his counterpart Wang Yi, Foreign Minister Jaishankar said that efforts had been made to convey India’s position. He stressed that India considers the complete withdrawal of the two countries’ troops from the border area as “the key” to improve bilateral relations.

Meanwhile, Minister Wang Yi said that the two sides need to resolve their differences, stressing that the world will listen if China and India have the same voice.

These meetings took place after Minister Wang Yi arrived in New Delhi on the evening of March 24. This is the highest-ranking visit of a Chinese official to India since the two countries’ troops clashed in the area of the Line of Actual Control (LAC) in 2020. Before that, India and China had advanced. held the 15th Army Corps Commander-in-Chief talks on March 11.

According to a joint statement after the negotiations, the Indian and Chinese officials exchanged detailed views on this issue under the direction of the leaders of the two countries to try to resolve the outstanding issues as soon as possible. The two sides reaffirmed that such a solution would help restore peace along the LAC and promote progress in bilateral relations. The two sides also agreed that until a solution is reached, it will maintain security and stability on the ground in the western region.

Border tensions between India and China escalated again in early May 2020 in the context of the two sides deploying thousands of additional troops and heavy weapons at the border. For more than 80 years, the two countries have always been at odds over the nearly 3,500-kilometer border along the Himalayas and clashes often occur over overlapping claims. Many rounds of negotiations have been conducted but still cannot bring the two most populous countries in the world to an agreement on the border issue.
