In the second minute of injury time, Alessandro Bastoni headed the ball into the position of Aleksandar Trajkovski, who played for Palermo between 2015 and 2019. The North Macedonian forward pushed the ball with his chest to clear Jorginho and then shot diagonally from outside the box. The ball went into the far corner, beyond the reach of goalkeeper Gianluigi Donnarumma. It was one of only two shots on target that the visitors rarely had in the 90 minutes.

Trajkovski and all the players and coaching staff hugged each other to celebrate, while some North Macedonian fans in the stands of Renzo Barbera (Palermo) were jumping up and down in ecstasy. Several Italian players tried to save lives, by running to referee Clement Turpin to complain, claiming that the away player had used his hand to play the ball. But the purpose is valid and recognized.

A 1-0 win puts North Macedonia in the ticket to the 2022 World Cup on 29 March against Portugal – tTurkey Throat 3-1 at the same time. And Italy missed two World Cups in a row, having lost to Sweden in two play-offs in the 2018 World Cup qualifiers. This is a great result, and a big step back for Italy compared to the Euro championship a few years ago. than half a year.

But in fact, in the 2022 World Cup qualifiers, there is always a very different Italy. Except for the 5-0 win over Lithuania, they have scored just eight goals in their remaining seven games, while at the Euros they have scored nearly two goals per game. Yesterday, attacking efficiency issues continued to kill Italy, despite having 66% possession, finishing 32 times – eight times more than the visitors.

In this match, Italy lacked a number of key personnel such as Leonardo Bonucci, Giovanni Di Lorenzo, Federico Chiesa, Leonardo Spinazzola, Andrea Belotti… due to injury, and Giorgio Chiellini was only physically fit to sit on the bench. North Macedonia – the team that finished second behind Germany in qualifying – are only without Napoli midfielder Eljif Elmas through suspension.

In the first half, the ball almost rolled on the North Macedonian pitch, but Italy did not create many clear chances. The best situation came from a North Macedonian error, when goalkeeper Dimitrievski passed straight into Domenico Berardi’s position. But the home striker’s shot was too light in front of empty goal, helping Dimitrievski back off to correct a mistake.

Italy maintained the pressure in the second half. 58 minutes, Berardi closed the ball and turned to get rid of central defender Visar Musliu, but his shot went over the bar. Minutes later, the No.11 striker squandered a chance when a close-range shot was blocked by Ezgjan Alioski.

Even when coach Mancini fielded Giacomo Raspadori, Sandro Tonali and Lorenzo Pellegrini on the pitch, the Italian attack did not improve. Italy’s best chance was Raspadori’s shot from outside the box that crossed the crossbar in the 78th minute, and Pellegrini’s situation went into the box and then fed it without any response from Pellegrini’s team-mate in the 85th minute.

Many attacks did not produce goals, Italy had to pay dearly in injury time.

After the match, the Italian media immediately made a scene. Sheet Italian Football blamed Jorginho for the home side’s absence from the 2022 World Cup. The Chelsea midfielder missed two penalties, as Italy drew twice with Switzerland and could not finish the group stage with top spot with direct tickets to Qatar. Permanent La Gazzetta dello Sport Comments: “Goodbye World Cup, goodbye European champions, goodbye everyone. The adventure is over. Mancini sucks, but Jorginho is far from his usual form. Italy deserves to be out of the 2022 World Cup. We are back to the end of the world.”
