Japan aims to lead the 6G race, prepares to make technical proposals

According to Nikkei, Toyota Motor, NEC and other Japanese companies will join a government-supported group to propose requirements for 6G networks. Slated to launch within the next decade, 6G is expected to be 10 times faster than the 5G networks in use today, delivering ultra-fast, ultra-low latency data transfers, enabling services such as Autonomous driving and remote surgery may take place.

The Beyond 5G Promotion Consortium is about to issue its first technical proposal. This group includes Japan’s Ministry of Internal Affairs and Communications, as well as major academies and companies that are moving towards 6G.

Taking the initiative at this stage will give Japan a strong competitive position, said Nikkei, as setting specific standards is difficult without research and development to provide a basis for data.

The proposal will include requirements specific to individual sectors and applications. The organization will call on companies worldwide to meet common goals to ensure that 6G is secure and reliable.

With fully autonomous cars, interruptions in data exchange can lead to accidents. The proposal sets a goal for autonomous vehicle technology to limit latency to about 1 millisecond – that is, less than a tenth of the latency of 5G – and error rate to no more than 1 part per million. .

In medicine, data rates will be up to tens of gigabits per second – more than 10 times what 5G offers – which is considered a prerequisite for remote surgery. Virtual worlds like the “metaverse” are predicted to require networks that can handle tens to hundreds of gigabits of data per second at peak.

Japan’s proposal will be submitted to the June meeting of the International Telecommunication Union, a United Nations agency. Japan plans to establish technical requirements for 6G networks by June 2023 and will use these requirements as the basis for defining specifications for specific applications.
