Over 200 carats of diamonds released after 20 years

The white diamond, dubbed “The Rock”, estimated to be worth up to $30 million, was exhibited for the first time in Dubai more than 20 years after its discovery.

“The Middle East has always had great respect for high-end jewelery and gems,” said Rahul Kadakia, Christie’s director of international jewelry, of the diamond show. The Rock” in the United Arab Emirates (UAE), from today until March 29.

The 228.31 carat diamond was discovered more than 20 years ago in South Africa. The company claims it is the largest white diamond ever sold at auction, measuring over 5 cm long, 3.4 cm wide and about 2.2 cm thick.

After completing the 4-day exhibition in Dubai, the gems will be transported to Taipei and New York, and then transferred to Geneva, the capital of Switzerland. The “The Rock” auction in Geneva is scheduled to take place on May 11.

According to Christie’s, the stone has gone through two owners. The first sale was kept secret, also mediated by Christie’s. The current owner suggests that the company hold a public auction when the gem and art market heats up again.

Christie’s expects the white diamond to sell for $20-30 million. It has sold two white diamonds over the past decade, a 102-carat stone in 2013 for $26.7 million and a 163-carat diamond necklace for $33.7 million in 2017.
