Russian figure skating prodigy banned from world tournaments

A month after the biggest scandal of the Winter Olympics, Kamila Valieva will return to the ring in Saransk (Russia), to attend the Channel One Cup tournament only for Russian athletes. The tournament coincided with the world championships in Montpellier, France. Due to sanctions after Russia launched a special military operation into Ukraine, no Russian athletes were allowed to participate in this tournament in France.

Valieva tested positive for a banned substance in a sample taken before the Olympics and has yet to receive any sanction from the Russian Anti-Doping Agency (RUSADA). Russian media said RUSADA has about six months to decide whether Valieva should face any disciplinary action.

Due to the positive test result, the 15-year-old athlete was not awarded a gold medal at the Olympics, even though Valieva had previously won the women’s team championship with the Russian team in China.
