The mystery of megaliths cut perfectly

Two blocks of stone 6 meters high rest on two supporting pillars, making them almost balanced without touching each other. Most of the scientific theory explaining the formation of Al Naslaa is that natural abrasion caused the megaliths to have odd shapes.

Found in the oasis of Tayma Oasis in Saudi Arabia, Al Naslaa has many carvings of Arabian horses, mountain goats and humans on its surface. Researchers aren’t sure if the engraving is related to the rock, but they think it’s thousands of years old.

The researchers put forward several theories about the perfect cut at the Al Naslaa center. One theory is that the rock was on a fault line and the crack was originally created when the ground beneath it shifted, causing it to split in half at a weak point. The fissure formed by this activity then becomes a dusty wind tunnel to sweep the rock surface. As grains of sand fly through gaps over thousands of years, they can erode uneven ground, resulting in a very smooth surface.

According to another hypothesis, the freeze-thaw cycle of weathering can cause cracking. In ancient times, water seeped into small crevices in sandstone blocks. This portion of the water can freeze, causing the crack to widen. Then, as the cold period ended, the ice melted leaving a perfectly straight line that cut through the giant rock.

Pillars under Al Naslaa rock are quite common in deserts. They are sometimes called mushroom stones based on their shape. This is often the result of weathering caused by strong winds near the ground causing rocks to wear out, or glaciers to slow down, dragging one rock mass into balance on top of another.

Al Naslaa is also subject to human influence. Simple metal tools cannot cut a block of stone in half in the middle. It is possible that ancient civilizations created strange stones as geographical markers, sites of religious significance or examples of early art.
