5 habits of people who never succeed

Stanford University (USA) researchers point to 5 habits that can prevent some people from progressing in their careers, no matter how hard they try.

Work harder, not be more creative

Many people think they need to work longer hours if they want to be successful, but that’s not the case, according to Stanford University economics professor John Pencavel. He found that hourly labor productivity plummeted when a person worked more than 50 hours per week. Therefore, someone who works 70 hours a week can only achieve the same performance as someone who does a good job in 55 hours.

“The key to success is working smarter, not more,” says John Pencavel.

Waste of time on social media

A survey conducted by human resources training company OfficeTeam (USA), shows that mobile devices are the most distracting thing in one’s work day. Specifically, an employee spends an average of 56 minutes a day, or nearly five hours a week. 30% of respondents said they spend most of their time checking personal email and 28% looking at social media.

Spending too much time on social media at work not only negatively impacts your productivity, it also causes you to be judged by your boss, if caught. Therefore, it hinders your raise or promotion.

Take advantage of the privilege

Abuse of privileges, such as taking advantage of going out while working remotely, has dire consequences. Abuse of power, whether in the form of loss of company time or money, is a grave mistake because it undermines the trust of others, especially managers, causing them to assume that employees never get work done without supervision.

Letting the ego get too high

Confidence is a great quality that helps you succeed in your career. However, having too much self-confidence, inflating the ego, backfires.

In a work environment, it is important to be humble and listen. “If you don’t listen to feedback to get better, you’re limiting yourself,” advises Lars Sudmann, American business strategy and leadership expert.

Talking without respect

Lewd, obscene, disrespectful comments will never get you far in most work environments.

Each company may have more relaxed rules and venues than others. However, in all those places, careless words can lead to the death of your career.

Master of education, director of the student management center of the University of Touro (New York, USA) Chaim Shapiro shares: “Every company has its own culture, but that is no excuse for excessive humor or demeaning words of others”.
